Description of the project:

The project is aimed at supporting sustainable economic growth by supporting Palestinian start-up ecosystems. This project promotes non-regular coding education, establishment of ICT social enterprises, and start-up support programmes through the creation of joint funds. For the successful implementation of this project, KOICA is working closely with Korean start-up support organizations, Palestinian local companies such as Paltel, and international organizations such as UNRWA. Although this programme does not only consider women as beneficiaries, it is expected to provide new opportunities for women in the project area through ICT education and start-up support.

Description of the project:

First, the project will improve the quality of training programmes based on the national technical and vocational qualification framework (NTVQF):
– Development of competence-based learning materials
– Support of regional teacher training centers
– Conduct of master trainer training (trainers of trainers)
– Support of local teacher training programme (trades, pedagogy, ICT)
Second, the project will improve the labor market relevance of the training programme:
– Support industry cooperation (Bangladesh-German Technical Training Center in Dhaka)
– Support entrepreneurship programme (Bangladesh-German Technical Training Center in Dhaka, Sylhet Technical Training Center, Kuhlna Technical Training Center)
– Support job placement service

Third, the project will promote girls’ education in three Technical Training Centers;
– Provision of friendly facilities for women
– Promotion of ‘e-skills for girls’ (promote G-20 Agenda and Better Life for Girls Initiative)

Description of the project:

To provide primary education with better quality in target areas, the project promotes 1) construction of ICT innovation centers in two primary schools in Nairobi, 2) improvements of the project sites’ environments, 3) dispatching of Korean experts to Kenya in the fields of teaching and learning , ICT innovation, installation of ICT equipment and construction to conduct technical consultations on empowering teachers and enhancing the quality of education, 4) training Kenyan teachers in Kenya, and 5) the provision of ICT equipment.

Description of the project:

In close coordination with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and Samsung Electronics, this KOICA project promotes vocational training for women in electronic industries. It includes establishing practice-oriented training centers such as the Accra Girls Vocational Institute (AVGI), the Pentecost Vocational Training Center (PVTI), and the Don Bosco Youth Network (DBYN). The project also promotes electronic appliance job training programmes. The curriculum for the vocational training programme is developed based on the market demand in the region. The local partners of the project are the Ministry of Education, the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, and the Ghana Education Service. This project won the third prize for the GIZ Gender Prize in 2016.

Impact of the project:

The project aims at fostering 100 female graduates annually and improving the female ratio of the graduates among electronic technical programmes from 4% in 2012 to 30% in 2017.

Description of the project:

In forest areas, a majority of women make their living by selling non-timber forest products (NTFPs). Harvesting and selling of NTFPs has high economic potential, however, the value chains of these products are not organised well enough to benefit the women. To improve the incomes of female micro-entrepreneurs, the project, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in cooperation with Orange Cameroon, will cooperate with selected women’s networks and associations in five regions which are partnering with public Women’s Empowerment Centres (WECs). The project will adopt several approaches. It will establish digital centres at WECs to provide the women with the business knowledge they need to improve their businesses. The materials will be accessed using computers and laptops. In addition, participants will receive training in micro-enterprise management. These trainings are followed by a peer coaching process in each of the associations. A smartphone application will be developed that monitors micro-entrepreneurs’ activities and collects information about their available stock or products and provides them with important market information. This will facilitate linkages between micro-entrepreneurs and customers. Furthermore, the project will also advise three women’s associations on how to improve their general management processes, so they can provide better services to their members.

Description of the project:

Through the international innovative EduApp4Syria competition, the Norwegian government and several international partners sourced the development of two smartphone apps that can help Syrian children (aged 5-10) learn to read in Arabic and improve their psychosocial well-being. The two winning games were selected from 78 submissions by an international expert jury. The winning games were chosen for their high quality and different approaches and gameplay that appeal to a variety of children.
The games have open source licenses to encourage maximum use and further creativity, and several stakeholders are already planning to revise one or both of the games into several languages that can reach millions of users in low-income countries.
Foundational literacy is crucial for developing digital literacy. In low-income countries, girls and women often are not allowed to – or do not have time to – leave the home in order to attend literacy classes. At the same time, smartphone penetration is increasing also among these populations, and technology companies see a clear market case for reaching more girls and women. Norway is therefore in close dialogue with stakeholders, such as mobile operators, about collaboration on the outreach of the EduApp4Syria games in a variety of languages, so that these games can be used as self-learning tools for foundational literacy learning on mobile devices.

Description of the project:

A mentoring network, which was set up by Deutsche Welle Akademie together with the Ugandan Hub for Investigative Media, and funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), encourages Kenyan and Ugandan journalists to share their experiences with digital discrimination. Until now, workshops have been relatively informal but the network is now aiming to professionalise its mentoring activities by developing a curriculum and setting quality standards. By the end of 2017, regular workshops focusing on digital security will reflect these standards. Topics planned include how to create a secure password, back up data, or encrypt emails as well as how to avoid risks while using public WiFi or erase digital tracks. The Deutsche Welle Akademie workshop “Digital Security for Women Journalists” in Nairobi also helped raise awareness about digital discrimination and offered participants from both countries a chance to network and gain additional skills. Although women are subjected to more digital harassment than men, very few women are experts on digital security. The workshop and the mentoring network help to change this situation.

Description of the project:

In Rwanda, digitalization has the potential to create new, well-paid jobs in the country as well as good career opportunities in international companies in Rwanda and abroad. However, since the IT-sector is traditionally a masculine domain, so far mainly men have profited form this development.

With WeCode, a women-only programming and BPO (business process outsourcing) agency, GIZ’s Promotion of Economy and Employment Programme works to close this gender gap, promoting girls and women to enter the IT-sector. The first part of the programme is an 11-week-long boot camp, where all necessary coding skills and work readiness skills are taught. The best students will go into 15 weeks of advanced training to become either a mobile- & full-stack developer or a QA (quality assurance)- & data analyst expert. The best graduates of the advanced courses are offered a contract with WeCode’s own BPO academy, which is run by a Rwandan/North American Tech company. Through this partnership WeCode assures for all acquired BPO contracts an international quality level of 98%.

By the end of 2019, estimated 900 women will have completed the course and are ready to change the Rwandan IT landscape.

Description of the project:

Funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, dual study courses are being introduced in the region for the first time, linking institutions of higher education and commercial enterprises as places of learning. This means that young people undertake training with a local business while simultaneously obtaining a qualification in higher education. At Al-Quds University in Jerusalem, a faculty is being established for dual study programmes which will initially cover three disciplines: electrical engineering, business administration and information technology. Both the theoretical and practical phases are being developed and implemented in collaboration with companies on the basis of needs and skills. The programme relies on close cooperation between Al-Quds University and the Palestinian private sector. The dual curricula for the courses in electrical engineering and information technology have been developed from scratch with support from international experts and in cooperation with the commercial enterprises. 25 Palestinian partner companies from the local business sector on the West Bank and in East Jerusalem have so far committed themselves to taking part in the launch of the new dual study courses. For the first academic year, 2015, a total of 44 company placements have been made available to students. 132 students are currently enrolled in the Dual Studies Programme, and 55 of them are women (41%).

Description of the project:

The Girls Innovation Camp (GIC) initiated by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), in cooperation with the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture as well as Intel Indonesia, addresses the need for improving gender equality in the workplace by raising the digital skill levels of women. Organised for the first time in 2016, the Girls Innovation Camp offers hands-on training in design thinking for innovation, career guidance, and provided an introduction to the basics of teamwork, leadership, and gender mainstreaming to female students and teachers. The initiative aims to foster innovation among students and teachers using technology in order to prepare them for jobs in the digital economy.
Aside from Intel, GIZ is currently cooperating with other IT companies such as IBM, Axioo or the local developer hub, Dicoding. This type of collaboration is needed to better match workforce supply and demand as well as expose students to the latest technology, real work environments, and personal skills required by the 21st century world of work. In addition to the realisation of the innovation camp, two films on gender were produced in cooperation with the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture as well as the private sector to promote and encourage women to study and work in the field of STEM and to address the importance of gender equality in companies.
