Status of the project:
start date, duration:
2014 - 2016, Scaled up to Phase-II
Description of the project:
India has a rich heritage of craft design and craft products. It comprises embroidery, zari, zardozi, metalwork, woodcraft, stonework and toy design. But many of the traditional crafts are vanishing due to less income, time-consuming manual processes, and non-reusability of designs created on paper. To overcome some of the above issues, optimized and easy to use ICT experiences are required in the increasing digital economy. The by-product of doing the above is conserving and enhancing the rich Indian heritage. Media Lab Asia along with its partner IIT Kanpur developed an ICT-based tool called Chic™ (CAD Tool for Craft) to help the artisans with 2D design making, i.e. embroidery (chikankari, zari, zardozi, etc.). Chic™ CAD has been deployed in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi states of India.
Impact of the project:
– 1003 women/girls trained on embroidery design using Chic™ (CAD Tool for Craft)
– 1000 women/girls trained on in basic computer skills
– 833 women/girls developed health awareness on basic health issues, such as sanitation, health and hygiene, Anaemia, Malaria, Chickenpox, waterborne diseases, Khasijukaam, Tetanus, Roundworm
